Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agricultures Launches Ghaf Tree Planting Campaign in Khalifa City After Receiving 37,000 Trees from the UAE

HE Eng. Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak, Minister of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, affirmed the Kingdom of Bahrain's commitment to implementing the initiatives of the National Action Plan for Achieving Carbon Neutrality, as announced by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. This is in line with the National Afforestation Plan set by the government under the leadership of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality in the Kingdom of Bahrain by the year 2060.

This took place during the inauguration ceremony for the planting of Ghaf trees in Khalifa City, located in the Southern Governorate. The trees were gifted to the Kingdom of Bahrain by the United Arab Emirates. The event was attended by the Minister of Works Eng. Ibrahim bin Hassan Al Hawaj, the Governor of the Southern Governorate HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, several officials, and the Ambassador of the UAE to Bahrain HE Mr. Fahad Mohammed Salem bin Kardous Al Ameri.

The Minister of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture assured the continuous acceleration of the National Afforestation Plan by introducing new tree species suited to the local environment. This initiative aligns with Bahrain’s environmental sustainability goals and aims to double the number of trees in the Kingdom by the year 2035.

The Minister expressed his gratitude to the United Arab Emirates, emphasizing the strong fraternal ties between the two nations. He also acknowledged the role of the UAE Embassy and the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment in launching the Ghaf tree planting initiative in Khalifa City, where 37,000 Ghaf trees will be planted.

Minister Al Mubarak praised the UAE for its support of Bahrain’s afforestation efforts, contributing to environmental sustainability and addressing climate change challenges.

For his part, HE Mr. Fahad Mohammed Salem bin Kardous Al Ameri, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to Bahrain, affirmed that this initiative stems from the close cooperation between the two nations in the field of Ghaf tree planting and sustainable development. This initiative aims to ensure a more sustainable future for the coming generations, benefiting them greatly.

The Ambassador emphasized the strong bond between the two countries and the commitment to continue collaborative efforts to achieve the desired development objectives.

It is worth noting that Ghaf trees have an ability to thrive in harsh environmental conditions, especially in desert areas. Their roots help enhance soil fertility by fixing atmospheric nitrogen, and they are resistant to drought and high soil salinity. Additionally, they provide a unique aesthetic value to the landscape.
