On World Veterinary Day: Undersecretary of Agricultural and Animal Resources Affairs Highlights the Vital Role of Veterinary Medicine in Protecting Public Health

Engineer Asim Abdul Latif Abdullah, Undersecretary of Agricultural and Animal Wealth at the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, emphasized the crucial role of veterinary medicine in safeguarding public health, stating that it serves as the first line of defense against zoonotic diseases (diseases transmitted between animals and humans). He explained that this role is manifested through monitoring animal-borne diseases, implementing vaccination and prevention programs, and ensuring the safety of animal products, all of which contribute to enhancing public health protection.

This statement was made in commemoration of World Veterinary Day, celebrated on the last Saturday of April each year, with this year's theme focusing on “Advancing Veterinary Protection for Human, Animal, and Environmental Health.” The Undersecretary took this opportunity to recognize the dedicated efforts of veterinary professionals within the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, as well as those in Bahrain’s public and private sectors, and globally, expressing his deep appreciation for their critical role in maintaining animal health, ensuring food safety, and combating zoonotic diseases.

He added, “The Ministry continues to support and strengthen the national veterinary system by developing national competencies and providing an appropriate environment for practicing veterinary work according to the highest international standards, ensuring the achievement of biosecurity and food security in the Kingdom, while maintaining ecological balance.”

The Undersecretary of Agricultural and Animal Wealth further stated, “We renew our pride and appreciation for all national veterinary personnel, affirming that World Veterinary Day is an opportunity to celebrate their efforts and raise public awareness of their vital role in supporting sustainable development in the agriculture and animal wealth sectors.” He emphasized that the day serves to highlight the contributions of veterinary professionals and their crucial role in promoting sustainable development within these sectors.
