The National Afforestation Strategy aims to double the number of trees in Bahrain by 2035

After the Cabinet approved the afforestation plan in the Kingdom of Bahrain, which aims to double the number of trees by the year 2035, in accordance with the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, may God protect him, regarding the expansion of afforestation projects in a way that enables them to achieve neutrality. The afforestation plan aims to double the current number of trees from 1.8 million trees to approximately 3.6 million trees by the year 2035, in line with the Kingdom of Bahrain’s commitments to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26).

The afforestation plan also aims to increase mangrove trees fourfold until 2035.

This is done through a number of initiatives and policies that aim to increase afforestation and motivate all parties to participate in afforestation projects to ensure the achievement of the annual goal, which is to increase the number of trees in government projects, encourage community partnership to increase the green area, encourage individuals to participate in afforestation, and provide supportive policies. For afforestation, adopting the necessary mechanisms to monitor the progress made in afforestation, and unifying standards related to afforestation.

The afforestation plan includes determining the types of trees that will be planted within government projects. They are large, evergreen trees that are compatible with the climate of the Kingdom of Bahrain and are characterized by a low level of water consumption. They also tolerate high soil salinity and a high level of absorption of emitted gases, and contribute to reducing temperatures, adding These trees are considered shade trees due to the large size of the green crown.
